Since the tea boycott that united the colonies before the birth of the USA, coffee has been the American beverage of choice. According to International Comunicaffe, 70% of people over age 65 prefer coffee, but that number is much lower among the younger sect. People under 30 choose tea just as often as they choose coffee.
While per capita coffee consumption has been cut in half since 1946, the love of tea has skyrocketed with young Americans. Less people under 30 are drinking coffee, and they are selecting tea instead.
As the second most popular beverage in the world, after water, tea has been enjoyed all over the world for centuries. Until recently, however, the US has stood firmly by its strong, black coffee. With the rise of Teavana and other gourmet tea companies, America is rediscovering its love for tea.
Starbucks is convinced. After becoming a household name for coffee, Starbucks acquired Teavana and began opening tea cafés that do not include coffee on the menu. It remains to be seen if the Teavana café will enjoy the same stellar success as the Starbucks coffee shops, but signs are good. The first café opened in New York and has been followed by grand openings in Seattle and Los Angeles.
