There is always lots of talk about the almighty coffee bean. Everyone has a favorite: light roast, medium roast, dark roast, Guatemalan, Columbian, flavored, Starbucks, Folgers, decaf or regular. Then there are different ways of grinding the beans. Some love the convenience of already ground and prefer whatever is on sale at the moment. Some wouldn’t accept anything less than the most organically grown, fresh ground. Then there’s talk about the preparation. Some prefer drip, some French press, some the burnt sludge at the bottom of the diner coffee pot. The water used is often an after thought. But did you know that approximately 98% of your daily coffee is water?
That’s right! This often-overlooked element is not only vital but can greatly affect the flavor of the coffee as well. Of course too much water will make coffee too weak, and too little will make it too strong. Beyond that though, it’s important to be aware of the type of water you are using. A really good cup of coffee is a combination of the elements in the coffee bean and the elements in the water. This is why distilled water is actually bad. The distilling process eliminates many of the minerals making for a very bland cup of coffee. However the abundance of minerals in some bottled waters make the water taste great but they can mask the complex flavor of the coffee.
Additionally, the temperature of the water can turn that delicious, favorable, enjoyable cup of coffee into a weak, bland mess. You might not know it, but water should be cold when it starts its journey to coffee blissdom. Then ideally, it will reach between 195 and 205 degrees Fahrenheit. This temperature will release the perfect amount of flavor. Boiling water at 212 degrees Fahrenheit will burn the coffee.
